The cooper literacy award

MANCHESTER, N.H.- Henry Wilson Elementary School and Beech Street School were both deeply shaped by the presence of Deborah Cooper. She was more than a teacher, she was a steady source of encouragement, imagination, and heart in every classroom she touched.

When she passed away from pancreatic cancer on November 2, 2025, she left behind far more than memories; she left a lasting impact on students, families, and colleagues who felt
truly seen and supported by her.

At Beech Street School, especially, Deb was incredibly valued— not only for her dedication to literacy, but for the way she lifted up every child with patience, warmth, and belief in their potential. Her influence helped shape a culture where curiosity was celebrated, growth was honored, and every student mattered.

In keeping with Deb's wish that donations benefit the school she loved, Beech Street School established the Cooper Literacy Award program to carry forward the work closest to her heart. Each year, one student from every classroom will receive a Cooper Literacy Award medal and a book of their choice, not based on test scores, but in recognition of perseverance, resilience, and meaningful growth in reading and writing.

This program reflects all that Deb stood for: equity, wonder, joy, and a deep belief in the transformative power of learning. Her legacy will continue to live on in every book opened, every story written, and every child encouraged to believe in themselves.
