West High student takes part in credit recovery program

Manchester School District’s summer learning programs are in full swing! Over the next week, we’ll be highlighting our programs, which include several new offerings. Today, we’re focusing on high school credit recovery.

MANCHESTER – Failing a class can have a big impact on a high school student, now and well into the future. Fortunately, through the credit recovery program, students are able to make up credits for failed classes. When they otherwise might not be able to compete in sports or graduate on time, credit recovery is an opportunity for those students to catch up.

The four high schools provide in-school support for credit recovery for multiple weeks during the summer, with students attending at their school during scheduled dates and times. Content area teachers are on hand throughout scheduled sessions to assist students with questions and celebrate achievements. Jillian Corey, the District High School Curriculum Director, said the program is built to be flexible and meet the needs of students.

“Students in summer programming need only attend as long as it takes to recover credit and scheduling allows for flexibility around work schedules and other time commitments,” Corey said. “Attendance in the beginning of programming is in the 100s across the district, but it dwindles steadily as students complete coursework and take a step closer to their educational goals.”

Credit recovery wrapped up for the summer this week. During the school year, students should meet with their guidance counselor to see if credit recovery is a good fit for them.
