FINE ARTS

The Manchester School District offers several exciting opportunities for students to explore their creative selves. We believe the cornerstone of every strong education must include an experience in the visual and musical arts.

Whether it’s at our multiple performances, art shows, or in the classroom, you will find that the fine arts are thriving here in Manchester. Our goal is to contribute to the overall development of each student, and use the arts to make them aware of their possibilities in the greater world.

BEGINNING INSTRUMENTAL PROGRAM – FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

When does instruction start?
Instruction will begin in October, usually in the 2nd week. A notice will be sent home with your child when the lessons schedule is finalized.

What is the cost of instruction?
There is no charge for school lessons.

Who can start lessons?
Any child in the fourth grade may start lessons. Children are encouraged to play an instrument that they enjoy and have a strong desire to play.

When do classes meet?
Classes meet once a week during the school day for 30 minutes.

What about class attendance?
Students are responsible for attending weekly lessons. Two or more unexcused absences may be considered a lack of interest on the part of the student, resulting in possible removal from the program.

What about the instrument?
Parents and guardians are responsible for securing the instrument. We suggest the instrument be rented instead of bought, at a quality local store with repair services. Please refrain from buying an instrument online. Most cheap online instruments will break, or will not sound right.

What lesson book do I need to purchase?
Please purchase the Essential Elements Book 1 for orchestra instruments and Standard of Excellence Book 1 for band instruments.

How long do lessons continue?
Lessons continue until the end of fourth grade. Students will then join the middle school band or orchestra and subsequently the high school band orchestra.

When should private lessons begin?
Extra private instruction outside of school is very helpful and recommended. Music teachers may be able to recommend qualified private instructors.
