ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PHILOSOPHY

MANCHESTER, N.H. SCHOOL DISTRICT

It is the belief of the Manchester New Hampshire School District that the center of the school curriculum is the child and that the instructional program should be tailored to fit a child's development pattern of education. It is further believed that all children should have an equal opportunity to pursue an education that will prepare them for the world ahead.

To meet this end, we will attempt to provide programs that meet the varied interests and learning styles of the pupils of the district. In doing this, we will strive for a balance that recognizes the quality of programs as well as the quantity.

THE CURRICULUM

We believe that an elementary school education should provide a solid foundation in reading, writing and mathematics.

We believe that the school should begin early to teach such concepts as cooperation, getting along with others and respecting the values of different groups. This should lead into an understanding of our basic democratic way of life, our form of government, and our responsibilities as individuals in a changing world.

We believe that the creative arts, science and technology should be part of an elementary school curriculum.

We believe that health education is a necessary part of the school curriculum and should include physical fitness training, nutrition information and an awareness of hazards from disease and addictive substances. Such education should encourage intelligent decision making to avoid such hazards.

THE APPROACH

We believe that whenever practical, the needs of children of varying abilities should be met within the same classroom.

We believe that a school's methodology should encourage communication and cooperation among students. Furthermore, it should stress problem solving and critical thinking skills, encouraging students to be independent thinkers and learners.

We believe that learning should progress from concrete to abstract, paralleling the stages of child development.

We believe that an orderly but child-centered environment is necessary for effective teaching and learning to take place.

We believe that the way teachers and other adults treat children in the school environment is the greatest determiner of the ethical and moral values the children draw from that environment.

THE PARTICIPANTS

We believe that a broad cross section of the community should be encouraged to participate in the educational process.

We believe that cooperative decision making should be encouraged at all levels in the educational community.

We believe that diversity should be valued - in students by teachers - in teachers by administrators - in schools by the community.

Dear Parents:

Home-school communication is an ongoing, important process. In order to insure that you receive important notices, newsletters and other information, we are sending home all students' work and other written correspondence each Wednesday throughout the school year. Students in grades 4 and 5 have daily homework assignments with weekly schedules for programs and special projects and assignments.

Please ask your child for her/his envelope each Wednesday, check for papers and correspondence, initial on the appropriate line, and return to school the following day.

At Wilson we stress student responsibility. Please assist us in this regard by having your child return his/her envelope promptly each week. Many important school notices have been lost before children reach home. We anticipate that the "Envelope Approach" will help solve this problem. Thank you for your cooperation!

At the end of last school year, the P.I.E. group, with your support of special fund raising projects, purchased a message board. Look for special notices and events on the board. We are most appreciative to P.I.E. for this generous donation. It will certainly help with communication to our family and friends.

Remember...

Wednesdays are Good News Day

at

Henry Wilson School

ARRIVAL TIME

Children should not arrive at school prior to 8:05 am because playground supervision does not begin until that time. At 8:20, students will line up by class in the playground area and proceed to class with their teacher. On rainy days, students will line up by class in the gym by classroom teacher.

*** Note: On Wednesday morning, teachers will be at grade level meetings from 8:05 to 8:35AM. At 8:35 students will head to their classrooms with their teachers.

DISMISSAL

Everyone is expected to go directly home with their assigned patrol unless other arrangements are made in writing. Dismissal is at 2:35 p.m. Students living north of Wilson School will exit the doorway on the northwest side of the building. Students living south of Wilson will exit the foyer doorway outside the gym on the southwest. Please use caution during arrival and dismissal periods. It is also most important to use the crossing guard's assistance. We want all individuals safe!

Those children who go home in car patrol need written permission to do so. Please pick up your children promptly. All cars should be away from the school by 2:35 when the walking patrols exit.

Please note the "no parking" signs. Please keep clear of this area for the safety of all our children. The traffic department does monitor this area and may issue parking tickets.

EARLY DISMISSAL

We encourage you to try to schedule your child's doctor and dental appointments around school hours. If your child has to be dismissed early, please send a note and sign the child out at the office when you come to check him/her out.

In the past, parents often call to speak to students during the day or request messages to be sent to children about dismissal changes. Unless it is a family emergency, we will not be able to do this any longer.

ATTENDANCE

All children are expected to be in attendance each day unless they are ill or a family emergency arises. If your child is going to be absent or tardy, it is important that you notify the school. Please call 624-6350 between 8:05 - 9:00 am or send a note with another child. Your child should return with an explanatory note.

Students who are frequently tardy or have poor school attendance will find the school contacting their parents by a phone call, letter or home visit. The school has a special program in which students who have perfect attendance for each month are recognized with a special certificate. Please join us in supporting good attendance. Look for your child's award.

BICYCLES,

SKATEBOARDS, SCOOTERS,

SKATES AND ROLLERBLADES

Children are not allowed to come to school on a bike, skateboard, scooters, or rollerblades. The unavailability of bike racks and the school's susceptibility to vandalism necessitates the prohibited use of bikes, skateboards, skates, or rollerblades. All toys and valuables should also remain at home.

DELAYED

SCHOOL OPENINGS

All delayed openings will be 90 minutes. The children should report for school at 10:05 am. All morning kindergarten classes will be canceled. Please listen to the local radio station for information regarding delays or closings.

DISCIPLINE

Our total school follows the Henry Wilson School Rules and the responsive classroom concept.

The rules are as follows:

1) We will use our manners. (for ourselves, others and the school community)

2) We will keep our hands and bodies to ourselves. (solve problems without fighting, or ask an adult)

3) We will use quiet voices and walking feet .(in all parts of our school)

4) We will make good choices for learning. (try our best everyday in every way)

5) We make a difference! We make the Henry Wilson School a safe place to learn.

Children are expected to adhere to reasonable rules and regulations as established by the school and the child's teacher. We ask that you discuss with your children the importance of and need for good behavior and a good attitude while at school. Students who break rules continuously will be sent to the office and handled accordingly. If problems reoccur, parents will be called to come in to help resolve the problem. If a child continues to misbehave and break school rules, an incident report will be sent home and the student will be given a number of in school detentions. These detentions will be served during recess periods under teacher supervision- NOT after school.

It is important that as a family, you review the Manchester Code of Conduct. This Code is followed for the safety of all members of the school community.

EMERGENCY INFORMATION

During the first week of school your child's teacher will be sending home an information card for you to complete. Having this information returned promptly and correctly is of utmost importance. A record of this information is kept in the school office in case you need to be contacted. Please make sure all telephone numbers and addresses are accurate and clearly written. Remember to put the name and telephone number of a person who can be contacted in case you cannot be reached. Please notify the school if you change addresses or telephone numbers during the year. It is very important that your records be kept up to date. We will update these forms at report card time periods.

Accidents- If your child is injured at school we will make him/her comfortable and then call you immediately if a serious injury has occurred. If you cannot be reached, we will attempt to contact the emergency number that you listed on the above mentioned information form.

Illness- If your child becomes seriously ill at school, we will contact you immediately. If we cannot reach you, we will use the emergency contact information you have provided. Please remember, we cannot keep seriously ill children at school.

INSURANCE

School insurance is available through a School Board approved insurance carrier. The forms are available at the start of the school year and have a deadline of September 19th.

LIBRARY BOOKS AND TEXTBOOKS

Students are responsible for all textbooks and library books issued to them during the school year. All lost or damaged books must be paid for. All monies collected are used for replacement purposes. If a lost book is found, money paid will be refunded.

LOST AND FOUND

All lost articles are placed in a "Lost and Found" area in the basement. Children are encouraged to look there for any lost items. The children are responsible for the safe keeping of their own valuables. We would encourage you to put names on jackets, backpacks and other items. This helps with recovery. This area is cleaned of items at vacation breaks.

MEDICATION

No medication of any kind may be taken in school unless the State Laws are followed. They are listed below for your information.

1. All medication must be brought to the school nurse or into the office and kept there until needed. Two important items MUST BE ON FILE BEFORE medication is brought to school. They must be done every year.

a. A written statement from the prescribing physician detailing the method of taking each dosage and the time schedule to be observed.

b. A written authorization from the parent or guardian indicating that the school assist the pupil in the matters set forth in the physician's statement.

The medication must be delivered in a container labeled with the student's name, the physician's name, date of the original prescription, name and strength of medication, and the directions for taking by the student.

*Forms for medication may be obtained from your physician for the school nurse.

NOTICES, NEWSLETTERS, AND OTHER WRITTEN CORRESPONDENCE

One day each week all written parent communication will be sent home with your child in a special Wednesday envelope. Please read the enclosed material carefully, initial the cover sheet on the envelope, and have your child return it to school the following day.

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

Communication between home and school is an important part of the educational program. Parents are encouraged to call the school to make an appointment to meet with their child's teacher so a time convenient for all can be established.

Last year, we made arrangements for parent teacher appointments during the day for the period right after report cards. We hope you will take advantage of this service.

PLAYGROUND AND SCHOOL GROUNDS

We would ask that parents speak to and reinforce appropriate behavior with their children regarding the proper use after school of the outside grounds, playground, and basketball court. This is our neighborhood school and we need to keep it looking well kept.

We would ask that adults who accompany their child to school neither come on school grounds nor go into the gym. If you observe a problem on the playground, please speak to the duty teacher.

SCHOOL DRESS

We ask that all students dress appropriately. Short shorts and tank tops are not appropriate. Please make sure written statements on T-shirts are in good taste. Good, safe footwear and sandals with socks are encouraged. Please remember in the cooler months, students will be outside for recess and they will need warmer clothing.

PHYSICAL

EDUCATION

Children should wear sneakers and appropriate clothing on the day their class has gym.

SAFETY PATROLS

Every child must go home in his assigned patrol. Car patrol is only for those students who are actually being picked up by an adult in a vehicle. No child will be permitted to go in another patrol without written permission from a parent. Students who are transported by bus will be supervised and placed on those busses by staff from the Auburn Street side of the school.
