Welcome to Southside Middle School
"Through the collaborative work of staff, students, parents, and community members, Southside Middle School strives to maintain a positive learning experience for all. We accomplish this by providing an open means of communication, and recognizing the academic and social success of our students."
The Southside faculty embraces the middle school philosophy and concepts. Most classes are heterogeneously grouped where all academic and maturity levels are mixed together. Adolescence is a time for rapid growth, and intellectual and social change justifying the educational approach to provide for a variety of opportunities. Middle school is a vehicle that offers ways for students to explore their interests, take risks, and make mistakes in a safe environment.
Southside Middle School has implemented the CRISS comprehension strategies into all classroom instructions at our school. Project CRISS, CReating Independence through Student-owned Strategies, is an interdisciplinary program which helps teachers incorporate reading, writing, and studying strategies into their regular content instruction. To obtain further information on the CRISS strategies, visit their web site at: http://projectcriss.com/
Southside has also implemented PBIS. This is a comprehensive, 3-tiered approach to implementing positive and consistent student discipline systems in schools and preschools. Unlike other approaches to student discipline, PBIS encourages a positive climate school wide by focusing systematically on the general school population, students at risk and students with intensive or chronic behavioral and emotional problems. PBIS also recognizes that student discipline systems, including the definitions of and responses to problem behavior, need to be consistent across classroom and non-classroom settings; thus, PBIS complements and extends the approach used in other programs such as Responsive Classroom. This program is implemented in conjunction with the New Hampshire Center for Behavioral Interventions and Supports. To find out more visit their web site: http://nhcebis.seresc.net/
We are excited about the 2008-2009 school year! Never hesitate to call teachers, guidance, or administration with questions or comments. We are all here to work collaboratively with parents and students to achieve success.
