Dear Parents,
February vacation is over and March certainly did come in like a lion this week. Hopefully everyone was able to get through the storm and has their power restored. It has been a busy week here at Southside. Progress reports for the third marking period are going home today with your student. This marks the mid way point in the grading period, so please encourage your students to make up any missing work and help boost their scores before grades close on April 2.

Coach Libby announced the members of the 2010 Southside Volleyball team. Congratulations go out to Savannah Claver, Daniela Galvez, Leydi Loaiza, Ray Ripaldi, Meaghan Six, Alexis Venne, Helena Akhtar, Ajok Akot, Kristen Erickson, Megan Esperance, Tyler Kelley, Almir Kevric, Sarah Labore, Ivanna Siller, and Jordan Smith. The team has been very busy practicing all week in anticipation of their first game against Parkside on Tuesday March 9 at 3:30. Their first home game will be Thursday March 11 at 3:30pm against McLaughlin.

As a tribute to the Iditarod which starts on March 6th, part of the 7th grade Wolves team will be studying the Alaskan dog sled tradition. They will be creating maps that will detail the journey of their selected racers, explore the traditions and history of the Iditarod, and create stories of the race from the dog’s point of view. This across the curriculum unit will also be exploring the training the dogs and mushers must go through, the cost of the race, the distance over time traveled, and the environmental extremes that pit man and animal against the wild.

Our 8th grade FACS- Family and Consumer Science classes with Mrs. Kyriacopulos delivered 65 handmade Valentine cards to the Manchester V. A. Medical Center Nursing Home. The Careers class enjoyed making them for our veterans as part of their unit on volunteerism. They also received a certificate of appreciation from the Department of Veteran Affairs.

Again a reminder for 8th grade parents, Memorial High School will have their Parent Information Night on Monday March 8 at 6:30 pm in the auditorium and Central High School will be having their Parent Information Night on Tuesday March 23 at 6:30pm.

Apple Therapy Services of Manchester would like me to remind parents that they offer free sports physicals each year to students. This year they will be held on Thursday, June 3 starting at 5:30pm. Pre-registration is required and forms are available in the office. Apple Therapy Services is located at 29 Koscuiszko Street in Manchester.

Lastly, students involved in Southside Athletics, the Student Council, and the National Junior Honor Society will be participating in a Joe Corbi Pizza fundraiser to help support their organizations. Order forms will be distributed to students on Monday March 8. All order forms will be due by Friday March 19. Forms can be turned into the office or to Mrs. Amlaw. Orders will be ready for pick up on Thursday April 8th between the hours of 4:00 and 6:00 pm in the Southside cafeteria. These items are perishable and need to be picked up on that day. The fundraiser is strictly voluntary and you can contact Mrs. Amlaw here at the school with any questions.

Enjoy your weekend!
Sincerely,

Marilyn L. Azevedo

Dear Parents,

I hope everyone is ready for February vacation! It is already here and when we return, it will be March which I am sure will come in like a lion. Today our students attended the Faculty Student Basketball Game which is an annual tradition here at Southside. Staff and students got to cheer each other on and participate in a fun assembly before their vacation begins.
Upcoming events for the month of March include SMS Volleyball games, PSG Talent Show auditions and performance, progress reports, and the Scholastic Book Fair.
Our PSG will be sponsoring Southside’s third annual Talent Show on March 26th. Sign ups will be March 2nd through 5th during lunches in the cafeteria. Students can sign up to audition and be part of the fun!
The Volleyball season will be well under way with several home games during the month of March. Our first home game will be March 11 at 3:30pm. Our school media center will be holding a Scholastic Book Fair March 22-26 in Southside’s library/media center. Teams will be visiting the book fair and students will have the opportunity to purchase books and other items. It’s a great fundraiser for our media center and a wonderful way to get students interested in reading.
Two parent group meetings will be held right after vacation. Our PSG, the Parent Support Group will be holding its monthly meeting on Tuesday March 2nd at 7:00pm in the conference room. Also SPAS, the Southside Performing Arts Supporters will be meeting on Thursday March 4 at 7:00pm Room 101 for any interested parents.
Our string orchestra and band will be taking part in the Queen City Music Festival again this year. The String Orchestra will be performing on Friday March 12th at 4pm in the Mirabile Auditorium at Memorial High School. Our 7th and 8th grade Band will be performing on Saturday March 13. They will be performing at 1:00pm in the Mirabile Auditorium.
After returning from vacation our 8th graders will be meeting with representatives from various high schools to discuss programs and schedules in preparation for next year. Representatives from Memorial High School will be here on March 2 at 8:30am. Central High School will be here on March 9 at 9:30am and West High School will be here on March 11 at 1pm.
Lastly a reminder that the week after vacation, progress reports for all students will be going home. The need to be distributed by Friday March 5th

Respectfully submitted,

Dear Parents,

It is hard to believe we are one week away from February vacation and the beginning of March is at our doorstep! Time sure is flying by. This month NECAP scores were released across the state. Our NECAP scores have shown improvement in instruction and I couldn’t wait to share the good news with you! Out of our 310 beginning grade seven students who were tested on the NECAP this fall, 159 (or 51%) of students scored in the proficient range in Reading. These scores show an 11% increase in the number of students who scored in the proficient range on the 2009 NECAP compared to 2008. In Math 135 students (or 41%) scored in the proficient range. These scores show an 8% increase in the number of students who scored in the proficient range on the 2009 NECAP compared to 2008. Out of our 291 beginning grade 8 students who were tested on the NECAP this fall, 168 (or 58%) of students scored in the proficient range in Reading. These scores show a 12% increase in the number of students who scored in the proficient range on the 2009 NECAP compared to 2008. In Math 121 students (or 43%) scored in the proficient range. These scores show a 1% increase in the number of students who scored in the proficient range on the 2009 NECAP compared to 2008. We will be sharing our results with our students and congratulating them on their hard work. Adequately Yearly Progress reports from the state will be released at the end of March. Way to go Southside!!!

Don’t forget, the PSG is sponsoring a Valentine’s Day Dance tonight, Friday February 12, for our students. Tickets are $5.00 at the door with your student ID. The dance runs from 7:00-9:00pm and is for Southside students only. If you were absent from school, suspended, in the focus room or on the detention list today, you are unable to attend the dance.

Our Student Council has collected $258.00 for the Red Cross Haitian Relief Fund. Students collected donations during lunches over the last few weeks. It’s great to see students involved with community service projects! Also our Yearbook advisor, Mrs. Girouard wanted me to remind parents that the second payments for yearbooks are due now and that the Valentine sale was a hit with the students.

I also wanted to pass along some information to 8th grade parents regarding high school next year. The Parents Information Night for Memorial High School will be on Monday March 7 at 6:30 pm in their auditorium. Central High School will be holding its Open House for the Class of 2014 on Tuesday March 23, 2010. Memorial High School staff will be visiting with our 8th graders here at school on Tuesday March 2 and Central High School staff will visit on March 9th.

Today attached to this newsletter will also be some information about a food drive being sponsored by the NH Food Bank, Cabaret Night at Memorial High School, and a parenting series sponsored by NH Connections. Also going home with students today will be there a copy of your students NECAP test results.

Lastly, just a reminder that there is no school on Monday February 15th, Presidents Day and February vacation is the week of the 22nd through the 26th.

Dear Parents,

February is here and let’s hope that the Groundhog will tell us that spring is right around the corner, but something tells me there is more winter yet to come. Our PBIS Universal reward for the month of January is a homework coupon worth one free homework assignment to use in a class of their choice. I am happy to report that we had 787 students that were discipline free for the month of January and received the homework coupon this week. That is an increase from December of 32 students! Way to go Southside. Keep up the good work and let’s see who earns next month’s Universal reward. All you have to be is discipline slip free to receive or participate in our monthly incentives.

Our Student Council has been busy during lunches each day collecting donations for the Haitian Relief Fund. Students who contribute a dollar get to put their name on a Haitian flag and have it hung in the cafeteria. They have collected $151.00 so far. Nice job!

Starting this week, the Yearbook staff is selling candy grams for Valentines Day during lunches in the cafeteria. Each candy gram contains a lollipop and a message to your Valentine. The cost is $1.50 for a large card and $1.00 for a small card. Delivery of the Valentines will take place Friday February 12, 2010.

The PSG will be sponsoring a Valentine’s Day Dance on Friday February 12, for our students. Tickets are $5.00 at the door with your student ID. The dance runs from 7:00-9:00pm and is for Southside students only. If you are absent from school, suspended, on the focus room list or the detention list on the day of the dance, you are unable to attend the dance.

Mrs. Genest would like to inform parents of 8th graders that there is still some openings for the 8th grade trip to Washington, DC. The students leave on Sunday April 25th and return on April 28th during our vacation week. Mrs. Genest is happy to answer any questions you may have and can be contacted here at the school.

We are still having some issue with students not following the dress code. I sent a copy of the dress code on the back of last Friday’s newsletter. Some students are still coming in with holes in their jeans, or wearing pajama bottoms, and slippers. Please help us remind students that these items are not acceptable dress for school. We appreciate your support.

Don’t forget, we have an early release day on Tuesday February 9th and that there is no school on February 15th, Presidents Day. February vacation is the week of the 22nd through the 26th.

Dear Parents,

As January comes to a close, we have had many events going on here at Southside keeping everyone busy this week. There was a great deal of excitement in the sports department, with Southside making it to all of the Championship Basketball games this week. The Girls A and B teams lost their championship bids, but the Boys games at Hillside this week were very exciting. The A team ended their season with a squeaker of a game, a 51-50 loss. Tyler Kelly and Omaru Kante were the high scorers. The B team won their game in overtime 52-50 to become the 2010 Manchester City Champions! A great game was played by Ryan Kelley, Christian Serrano, Brandon Scott, Trevon Maughn and John Cook. Congratulations go out to all the athletes for a great season!

Volleyball sign ups are now being held. This is a co-ed sport where boys and girls play on the same team. Tryouts will begin Feb. 8th. See Mrs. Libby in the Guidance office for the necessary forms and more details. All students must have an updated physical on file in order to participate in student athletic programs.

Applications for the annual Clement Lemire Hockey Tournament are currently available in the office. The Tournament consists of two divisions- Elementary (3rd-5th grades) and Middle (6th-8th grades). Applications will be collected from the schools on the morning of February 12th. All games are played at either the JFK Coliseum or the West Side Ice Arena between the hours of 3:00pm and 8:00pm, Monday through Friday. The Tournament will last three to four weeks.

Last week was our first drawing in the PBIS T-Shirt raffle. Every Friday students can use one of their blue PBIS tickets and enter a weekly raffle to win a Southside T-shirt. Tickets are collected on the Smart Cart in the cafeteria. The winner is drawn during the announcements on Friday afternoon.

Our Student Council is busy working on their next community service project. During lunches, students are collecting donations of a dollar or more for the Haitian Relief Fund, sponsored by the Red Cross. When a student makes a donation, they will receive a paper Haitian flag that they can write their name on and have them posted in the cafeteria to show their contribution and support.

Lastly, in an effort to improve communication the school district has been working with various City, Police, Fire and Health Departments on a text/email notification system. They are now using the Nixle municipal communication system to send out alerts. People who sign up can choose to receive email and/or cell phone text alerts from the School District Administration and other city agencies. Nixle is free but if you choose the text option your standard text message rates apply from your cell provider. Information on Manchester agencies using Nixle can be found at:

As the month of January winds down, many activities have been taking place here at Southside. On Wednesday of this week, Det. Abruzese and I met with each grade level to remind students of their responsibilities in terms of conduct at school. We felt it was important for students to know that certain activities that they may become involved in were not only a violation of the school’s code of conduct but also of the law and there were legal ramifications that could result. The message was well received by students and we as a school community will continue to move forward making positive changes to our school climate.

Grades close today for the second marking period and the new quarter starts on Monday January 25th. Teachers will begin the process of entering their grades so that report cards can be printed and distributed to students. Reports cards will go home the week of February first.

The school’s basketball team played their last regular season game on Thursday of this week against Parkside. The City Basketball Tournament will take place next week beginning on Tuesday January 26th with the Boys A and B team playing in a championship game versus Hillside at Hillside. The B team will play first at 4:00pm followed by the A team. On Wednesday January 27th the Girls A and B team will play in their Championship games. The A team will play McLaughlin at 5:30pm at McLaughlin and the B team will play Hillside @ Hillside at 4:00pm. Congratulations go out to all of our teams for making it to the championship rounds!

Our school media specialist/librarian, Mrs. Brock has asked me to remind parents that overdue library books must be return and lost items must be paid for. Students who may have lost library materials should see Mrs. Brock as soon as possible.

Lastly, I would like to remind parents and students about the school dress code. Lately there have been an increased number of students wearing slippers and pajama pants to school. These items are inappropriate and should not be worn. I have attached a copy of the dress code policy for the Manchester School District to this letter. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.
