Wyatt Helper and Benjamin Johnson, students at West High School, have been
selected as candidates for the Presidential Scholars Program sponsored by
the U.S. Department of Education.
The students were selected based on high scores earned on either the SAT
or ACT college admission tests. They will join 2,600 other students from
across the country who will be asked to complete a rigorous application,
including essays, self-assessments, secondary school reports, and
transcripts to qualify for the next phase of the competition.
In the spring, an evaluation of candidate applications will whittle the
number of semi-finalists to 500. Ultimately, 141 Presidential Scholars
will be named and invited to a White House ceremony in June.
“Everyone in the school district is very proud of Wyatt and Ben, and we
wish them well as they go through the application process,” said Henry
Aliberti, acting superintendent of schools.
The program was established by President Lyndon Johnson in 1964 to honor
the nation's most distinguished high school seniors.
