District, MCTV Launch Program

Designed To Teach English to Parents of City Students

“Crossroads Café,” a 26-part television series designed to teach English
to non-English speakers is now being aired on MCTV’s Channel 16,
Manchester’s educational access channel.

Each episode will be shown four times a week, at 4 p.m. and 11 p.m. on
Tuesdays and at 2 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Wednesdays.

The series, produced by Oregon Public Television, addresses real life
scenarios with humor. Actors encounter situations commonly faced in
family, workplace, and social situations.

District officials obtained the program in order to provide parents of
Manchester school students with an additional opportunity to learn English.

“Our families are starving for the opportunity to learn English, and there
are simply not enough adult English classes available, so we thought the
TV show would be a good way to address this need,” said Maureen
Richardson, coordinator of the district’s English language learner program
at the high school level.

Richardson stressed that the morning and afternoon time slots were chosen
to allow viewers who work second and third shifts to benefit from the
program.
