In an effort to make the search for a new Manchester school superintendent
as inclusive and open as possible, the Board of School Committee will host
a public forum at which citizens will be given the opportunity to question
finalists about their views on education and their plans for the future of
the Manchester School District.
“We feel it is critical that as many members of the community as possible
have the opportunity to meet the candidates,” according to Katherine
Labanaris, vice chairman of the Board of School committee and chairman of
the superintendent search committee.
The public forum will be held Wed., March 5 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at
Memorial High School. All finalists will offer brief opening statements
and will answer audience questions.
All employees of the school district will be offered a similar opportunity
Tues., March 4 from 6:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Memorial.
Labanaris noted that previous superintendent searches limited interaction
with teachers and members of the public to small group gatherings. “We
wanted to expand the process to give as many people as possible a solid
foundation for forming opinions about the candidates. We also wanted to
give the candidates as much exposure as possible to teachers and
citizens,” Labanaris said.
The public forum and teacher forum will cap a series of school tours and
meetings with principals, parents, district administrators, and students
that will take place March 4 and 5.
The Board of School Committee will meet on Sat., March 15 to interview and
select the new superintendent.
The four finalists are Dr. Thomas Brennan, superintendent of the Kearsarge
Regional School district; Dr. Aquine Jackson, chief academic officer of
the Milwaukee School District; Dr. Herbert Levine, interim superintendent
of the Blackstone-Millville, Mass. School District; and Dr. Darrell
Lockwood, superintendent in Goffstown.
