News from the Guidance Office
The Parker Varney Guidance program is based on comprehensive services including, group and individual counseling as well as classroom guidance lessons. It is my belief that the success of a counseling program is based on children’s comfort and familiarity with their school counselor.
As a new member of the Parker Varney team, it is my goal this year to become a familiar and visible presence in the building and a trusted adult in students’ lives.
This year, I will be reviving the peer mediation program. This is a program that trains selected fifth grade students to work with their peers, to help them successfully resolve interpersonal conflicts without resorting to violence or demeaning strategies. This year, I will be selecting 8 fifth graders to pilot the program, based on an application process and teacher recommendations.
In addition this year, I am running several sessions of specialized groups focusing on topics including; anger management, social skills, friendship, organization and stress management. These groups typically run during lunch time and are broken up by grade level. More groups will be added on an as needed basis.
It is my belief that the social and emotional well-being of a child is crucial to their academic success, and requires collaboration between school and home. I am here to offer parent support, crisis intervention and make referrals to outside sources. If I might be of help to you or your child, please do not hesitate to contact me.
