School Hours: Kindergarten through fifth grade: 8:35 a.m. to 2:35 p.m.

PLEASE do not drop your child off at school prior to 8:05 as there is no adult supervision prior to this time.

Tardiness: Students who arrive after the second bell rings (8:35 a.m.) must report to the main office before going to class. On rainy or snowy days, students will be admitted to the gym at 8:05 a.m. Students persistently tardy will be assigned after-school detention.

Transfers: With the new No Child Left Behind laws, it is important to notify the sch of any move or change of address. Permission for a student to attend Northwest School from out-of-district can only be granted through the Assistant Superinten-dent’s office. A letter of request must be submitted, addressed to Mrs. Shelly Larochelle, principal of Northwest Elementary School. 

Absence Procedure: Please call the school at 624-6321 (24-Hr. Attendance Hot Line) and leave a message if your child is going to be absent from school . When a student returns, send a note to the teacher with reason for and date(s) of absence.

Any notes regarding your child should include the date, your child's first and last names, what after school program they attend, if one, and the teacher's name, especially notes which need to be forwarded to the office, the nurse or to other faculty as applies.

Early dismissal or change of dismissal time or procedure: Children must have a note signed by a parent/guardian in advance of early dismissal from class except in emergencies. Also, if your child takes a regular bus or after-school, daycare program bus, they must have a note if they are not taking that bus on any particular day(s).

School Lunch: Hot lunch money is collected every Friday ($1.80/day for lunch or $1.10 daily for breakfast) for the following week. For those eligible, reduced-price lunch is .40/day, and reduced-price breakfast is .30/day. Cold lunch students may purchase milk .35 per day, payable on Friday for the following week or paid at lunchtime. The food service program runs on an automated data processing system. Students utilize 'debit' cards to pay for meals. These are distributed daily by their teacher. Parents are urged to prepay by check (made out to Northwest School Food Sevices). As an incentive, for every $50.00 received for deposit, $55 will be credited to child's account. Prepayments may be made for anyh dollar amount.

Lunchroom: Children are expected to remain in their seats and use appropriate table manners. Repeated violations will result in detention and/or suspension.

Medication: Prescription and non-prescription drugs (including Tylenol, aspirin, and cough syrup) will be administered only if the appropriate form is signed by both the prescribing physician and the parent. The form must indicate the name of the medication, the time to be given, and the dosage. Prescription drugs must be sent to school in container with the prescription label on it. Non-prescription drugs must be sent in an appropriately labeled container with the child's name and class on it.

Textbooks: Please cover textbooks to preserve them for future use.

Students are not allowed to ride bicycles, skateboards, or roller blades, to school. Wheelies are also not permitted within the school grounds. NO DOGS are allowed on school property at ANY TIME.

Insurance: Available only through school-board approved insurance company.

School Reports: Report cards are sent out three times a year, as well as progress reports. (Please check the attached school calendar on the home page for specific dates).

Telephone: Children may use the telephone only in emergencies. After-school arrangements should be made prior to coming to school. Also, no use or display of cell phones by students will take place during the academic school day. Cell phones will be confiscated if students persist in bringing or using cell phones at school, and disciplinary action will result.

Lost and Found: There will be a centrally located lost and found area. The school is not responsible for personal items brought to school.

Activity Calendars: Northwest activity calendars will be sent home with your child monthly.

Playground: Only students are allowed on the playground. Only nerf-type balls are allowed. Walkmans, headphones, video games, and beepers, etc., are not allowed in the building.

Physical Education: Please make sure your child wears white-soled sneakers on the day of this class.

Discipline: Children are expected to adhere to reasonable rules and regulations as established by the school and your child's teacher. Student expectations will be thoroughly re-viewed, along with appropriate consequences. Observed infractions will result in detention(loss of recess) with a written notice sent home to be signed. Repeated offenders will be subject to after-school detention and/or suspension. Parent support is essential to assure a safe environment for everyone.

Visitors: All visitors and parents are asked to please report to the office upon arrival. No one is allowed to go to a classroom without office permission and a pass.

Dismissal Procedure: All classes will be dismissed under the supervision of their classroom teacher. Crossing guards will be located at the corners of Alsace and Mason, Alsace and Bremer, Alsace and Kelley, and Youville and Mason Streets.

Children being picked up by car are required to bring a note to their teacher. No parking is allowed at any time in the bus turn-around. Please meet your child in front of the school to safely bring them to their car. Parking is available on the upper playground at dismissal. Do not use the bus turn around at dismissal.

Busses: Bussed students will be dismissed by group as their bus arrives. Only students that are assigned to bus transportation are allowed on the bus. No exceptions will be made.

Transfers & Moves Out-of -District: If you move out of the Northwest district, which is north of Amory Street and west of the river, please notify the school office. Permission for a student to attend Northwest School from out-of-district can only be granted through the Assistant Superintendent's Office. A letter of request must be submitted, addressed to Dr. Robert Duclos, Principal of Northwest School.
