Welcome to the

Northwest Library Media Center!

The school library media center is a place where students and teachers can browse and borrow library materials, study, complete special projects, do research and use our computers for educational purposes. Our library media center is wheelchair accessible, and contains over 8,000 volumes including DVDs, videotapes, computer software, and laser discs. Students and staff can search and quickly locate materialswith our Winnebago Spectrum on-line catalog. We currently have five Macintosh computers that are connected to the Internet for student use.

Students enjoy learning about library skills through books, educational games, and scavenger hunts. Grades one through five visit the library weekly for forty-five minute period. During this time, students are given the opportunity to sit in our famous book talk chair, share their favorite page, illustration, read a special part of the book or do a book talk. This gives the students the opportunity to express themselves through the enjoyment of a book, which will encourage others to do the same and enhance self-confidence. Students are allowed to borrow a book from the library weekly and are encouraged to bring them back on their allotted class time. Students who lose or do not return their library books in the same condition that they borrowed them are required to pay to have the book replaced. Students who find their book in a timely manner and in the same condition it was borrowed in will be refunded their money.

Book Fair: 2008 Northwest Book Fair raised over $1,600.00 in profit, plus an additional $100.00 in books and another $120.00 that we spent on books that we got for half price. 32 new Accelerated Reader Quizzes were purchased to go along with some of our new books. We look forward to the Book Fair in the spring of 2009!

When 100% of a class returns their library books on their scheduled day, they receive "Egg-Citing" Library News in which each student gets to pick a plastic 'egg' out of the basket which may contain a special treat, a message giving them an extra 15 minutes of library time with a friend, a pencil, special bookmark, or a prize. At the end of the year, the class that has had the most 'egg-citing' news get a library pizza party! Our winning class for the 2006-2007 school year was Miss Cote's 5th grade class. Congratulations! Who will it be for 2008?

Mrs. Piotrowski, the full time LMS at Smyth Rd. School, teaches classes with us all day on Tuesdays, and Ms. Moreau, the full time LMS at Gossler Park School, teaches three classes on Wednesdays. They are both great additions to our staff!

We are always looking for donations (books, VCR tapes, CD's , DVD's and Monetary donations) to help expand our collection. If you would like to make a donation, please feel free to contact us at 624-6321, ext. #15.

PLEASE remember to send in your old ink cartridges. We recycle them and get money back for the school in return.

During the 2007-2008 school year, we raised over $500.00 for the school just by recycling old cartridges!
