The Landscaping & Horticulture program is a student-centered
project- based learning environment that prepares students for careers
in the Green Industry (greenhouse production, floral design, nursery and
garden center management, parks and grounds management, landscape design,
construction and maintenance.) As a planning/design/build program, students
plan, design, implement and maintain a variety of landscape projects. Topics
include plant biology, plant propegation, soils, arborculture, pest and
disease control, landscape design and construction. The two MST retail
greenhouses give students direct experience with the basic elements of
floral design, floral shop management, greenhouse managment, retail sales,
customer relations and marketing.
Through active participation in the design, construction and maintenance of two
homes built by MST students and other landscape projects throughout the city,
students learn the elements of landscape design, construction and property maintenance.
Using AutoCAD, students design and build decks, patios, walkways, retaining walls
and water features. Students design and install sprinkler systems and exterior
accent lighting.
Landscape contracting is the fastest growing sector of agriculture in New England
and employment opportunities in this area continue to be excellent. Recent graduates
have established their own horticulture enterprises and others continue their
education toward a two or four-year degree in areas such as horticulture, floriculture/greenhouse
management and landscape architecture.
