Each year, we follow an Art History timeline. Beginning in September with Ancient Egyptian art, and ending in May with Modern and Contemporary art. The last 6 weeks of school we look at Multi-Cultural art. All the grades study each unit at the same time, with each grade doing different projects inspired by the artwork we look at.
My purpose for developing this approach to teaching art is to get students in the habit of looking at and talking about art, in addition to making it. This helps to develop appreciation and knowledge of art as well as skill in making it.
