The Hillside Middle School Spelling Bee is held every year in mid-February. Each English teacher in grades six, seven, and eight is given a list of twenty-five qualifying words two weeks prior to the school Spelling Bee.
On a designated day, the teachers dictate the words to the students who write them down. The tests are corrected by the teachers, and those students with five or fewer errors qualify for the school-wide Spelling Bee.
Jack Salvatore is the 2008 winner.
