STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

About the Program

The purpose of the Student Assistance Program is to identify and assist students who may be experiencing personal, family, alcohol or drug problems which are affecting their ability to perform well in school.  By participating in support groups with peers who share similar concerns, students are able to learn more about their particular circumstances and develop healthier coping skills.  Participation in the program is both confidential and voluntary.

Support groups consist of no more than 12 students and are typically separated by gender.  Groups meet on a regular, but rotating basis, reducing the risk of students missing the same class multiple times.

Program History

The Manchester Student Assistance Program began around 1985 when the district was offered federal funding to help combat the growing spread of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs among the city’s youth.  Since that time, the district has hired seven SAP Counselors, one for each of the middle and high schools.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is essential to the success of the Student Assistance Program.  Contact with the SAP Counselor and participation in support groups are confidential under Federal Law.  All SAP service are confidential except in cases involving suicidal behaviors, physical or sexual abuse/assault, or a threat to the physical safety of others.

How to get involved

Presentations outlining the SAP program are typically offered in the fall.  Most students who received services refer themselves at this time.  In addition, parents, teachers and other school administrators can also refer students to the program throughout the school year.  After a referral has been made, the SAP Counselor will meet with the student individually to explain the program and discuss options for support.  Participation in the program is voluntary.

Types of Groups

Groups are designed to support students with specific concerns.  These include topics such as grief and loss, weight, peer relationships, parent separation/divorce, drugs and alcohol, etc.
