In the theme Family Photos of the Houghton Mifflin Invitations to Literacy Program there is a selection Now One Foot, Now the Other by Tomie dePaola. One section of the story discusses a special outing Bobby enjoys with his Grandfather Bob. The class makes Memory Boxes. They place things in their boxes that remind them of a special time they remember. Their completed Memory Boxes will be displayed in the library for the students in the school to enjoy.
We study community in social studies. We learn a song about communities,we make games to reinforce what we have talked about. We make atlases including a map that traces our route from home to school, a map of the classroom and maps of the different areas of the school. We have a book called "Our Global Address" that shows how we are a part of a small community to a member of the global community. We discuss different types of community workers. To finish off this unit, we watch videos that show the different types of communities.
In Science we study Dinosaurs. We learn about Characteristics of Dinosaurs. We also learned about Dinosaur Teeth and how the teeth determine what they eat. We will learn about Fossils and how they are made.
