CHS Amnesty InternationalAdvisor: Ms. Raymond
1. What is Amnesty International? Amnesty International is an independent worldwide movement working impartially for the release of all prisoners of conscience, fair and prompt trials for political prisoners and an end to torture and executions. 2. How does Amnesty work to free political prisoners? Amnesty's primary tools--the letter, telegram and e-mail--are remarkable for their power and simplicity. Some- times a single letter is enough to improve a prisoners situation. More often a government relents when it gets a sense that much of the world objects to its judgment. 3. Central's Chapter of Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) is comprised of students who meet regularly to write letters, publicize and organize actions on behalf of individual prisoners of conscience, and work on special campaigns such as the "Stop the Use of Child Soldiers" campaign which is part of the National Week of Student Action. Amnesty believes that "Children have the right to be children, not soldiers." 4. Meetings: Are usually held in Room __. All students are welcome to attend any meeting and, if interested, in joining Amnesty International . Students can make a difference. As stated above, AI works specifically for: the release of prisoners of conscience--men, women and children imprisoned for their beliefs, color, sex, ethnic origin, language, or religion, provided they have neither used nor advocated violence; fair and prompt trials for all political prisoners; an end to torture and executions in all cases. One prisoner of conscience in Asia wrote: As we are students and builders of the future, the future is our responsibility. You, our friends abroad, are a great source of courage. You, too, can make a difference in the lives of thousands of people who are unjustly imprisoned, tortured or facing execution. Join us. 5.
