Improvement Plan
2007/2008 School year
Our improvement plan has been developed through the efforts of the Bakersville staff and parents serving on various committees. This plan is designed to aid us in helping children achieve their full academic potential. We review the implementation of the plan on a monthly basis and make adjustments as needed.
Language arts: Our focus in language arts is designed to address specific areas identified through assessment.
- Five running records per week will be taken by each teacher to provide current student information
- Thirty minutes of sustained writing workshop will occur on a daily basis
- Gathering information and using data from informational texts will be a focus
- Intervention programs offered after school for primary students
Math: This year, the Manchester School district is piloting several options for a new core math program. In addition to this endeavor we have selected several strategies to improve math performance.
- All staff members to enhance the variety currently offered will review the use of manipulatives in teaching math concepts
- Students will be asked to show their work in words, numbers, and pictures
- One hour of math instruction will occur on a daily basis
- Math facts will be incorporated into the homework club to increase fluency with these facts
- Staff members read and shared Five Basic Steps to A Balanced Math Program
Coordination of services: Bakersville students are fortunate to have support staff available to provide assistance to those students who need extra attention whether it is because they are struggling or are exceeding expectations. Our goals in this area are to provide a focused, continuous instruction.
- Correlation forms and regularly scheduled meetings will provide an opportunity for all service providers to meet and share information/ideas
- Response to Intervention model of providing instruction will be utilized
- Action research will be conducted on meeting the needs of our English Language Learners
Parents: Parents are welcomed as partners in their child's learning. During the 2006/2007 school year, we completed a school/community index. The information from this survey is driving our focus for the year.
- Homework expectations will be clarified and disseminated to all staff members and parents
- Parent guides will be provided for the language arts and math curricula
- Parents will be trained in working with other parents to provide help with children's learning and school expectations
