Art Education

with Heather Roy

School art goes beyond the creating of objects, and places an emphasis on human values. Children are the future and when values are instilled in our children they will become positive role models for future generations. The visual arts at Bakersville help us focus on the nature and value of beauty, developing visual and sensory awareness which evoke emotions. The art classroom exposes students to a safe, healthy learning environment that nourishes self expression while assisting students in the process of developing self identity.

Through the arts, students learn to work with others cooperatively while independently exploring a wide variety of media. Art integration is a useful bridge toward understanding and positive reinforcement for the subject being studied. At Bakersville we use the Picturing Writing Program. This is a dynamic art-and-literature based approach to writing developed by Beth Olshansky at UNH. Students learn the history of art, techniques, as well as multilcultural art projects. These projects demonstrate learning about cultural differences and help our students appreciate and respect one another.
